Legends Ride kick-starts Rally
Deadwood - The fourth annual Legends Rail launched the Sturgis Rally on Monday with more than 250 rally enthusiasts, celebrities and builders of cruise bike drivers or passengers of the Silverado-Franklin Hotel in Deadwood the Buffalo Chip Campground in Sturgis.
Motorcyclists involved in the race were only a fraction of the crowd that turned out to admire the monuments and Deadwood bikes before the riders hit the road.
Founded by Rod Woodruff, owner of the Buffalo Chip, the Carrousel Legends is both a recreational walk and raise funds for local non-profit and charitable organizations.
This year, half the proceeds from the tour went to the Olympics in the Black Hills Special purchase of a new bus. The other half will go to the Sturgis Museum and Hall of Fame to complete the necessary funds to a larger facility to house the historic bikes there. More funds from the walks to come will continue to go to the museum.
Woodruff said he would rather have a purpose for charitable fundraising, rather than just collecting money in a big pot, where nobody can see it.
The trip has attracted celebrities such as family Ness, California motorcycle design firm Arlen Ness, Inc., Ms.South Dakota International 2011, Lori Visker, celebrities from the television series "Survivor" Rupert Boneham and Holly Hoffman, television personality Lorenzo Lamas, and much, much more.
Visker said she joined the tour the opportunity to raise money for the bus and the museum, and the simple joy of riding.
"I'm just there for fun," she said.
Organizations that have received the product expressed their sincere thanks to all those involved.
Jack Lynass, president of Black Hills Special Olympics, said he "could not be happier" to the generosity of the riders and administrators who organized the event. He estimated that the new bus will increase participation in Special Olympics by 25 percent, due to the added convenience for those involved to participate in Special Olympics practice.
