Butter cow: Its the butter cows centennial celebration, and the State Fair is extolling the tradition with 100 tribute cows throughout the grounds, a new contest and new attractions.
Varied Industries Building: The Varied Industries Building is also celebrating 100 years. Built in 1911 and called Machinery Hall until 1934, the building has grown to become one of the largest four-season exhibition halls in the Midwest.
The fair: Its the State Fairs 125th year at its current location.
Perhaps the most unique butter cow tribute at the 2011 Iowa State Fair will also celebrate food and farming while helping those who are food insecure all done with cans. A Canstruction exhibit using thousands of cans of food to construct a replica of the butter cow, a carton of milk and a market hog set in a field of corn and soybeans will be on display in the south atrium of the Varied Industries Building.
Following the fair, all of the canned goods in the exhibit will go to those needing food assistance throughout the state. During the fair, the exhibit will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The display will be staffed with farmers, commodity group partners, food bank staff and more, all designed to interact with fairgoers and spread the word about food, farming and those in need.
