Is cursive a necessary write of passage?
Ruperto DeLaCruz has loved to write in of cursive since he learned the handwriting style two years ago.

But around the country, school districts are pulling away from teaching handwriting to students.
Indiana will not require the teaching of cursive starting in the fall. Although teachers there can still teach cursive, an Indiana University professor told the Associated Press that many educators haven't had time to because it is not a priority.
The Common Core State Standards, a series of curriculum guidelines adopted by 44 states, do not address handwriting. When Massachusetts adopted the Common Core last year, it amended them to ensure that fourth-graders can "write legibly by hand, using either printing or cursive handwriting," according to the state's curriculum.
Districts can decide if they teach printing, cursive or both, said JC Considine, a spokesman for the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
"I think it's reflective of our being a local-control state," Considine said. "Districts ... know and determine best what they are looking for in terms of curriculum."
Several MetroWest and Milford-area school leaders said they have no plans to stop teaching cursive, although some acknowledged it has become more difficult to teach handwriting and technology/typing with limited resources.
School leaders said cursive writing is easier for many students than printing, improves the neatness of handwriting and is needed for writing checks and signing legal documents.
"We are teaching cursive, and we have no plans to change that," said Kevin O'Malley, head of school at Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School in Franklin. "I certainly do understand the issue with the emergence of technology as a primary tool of education.
